Workshops
28.6 • 12.7 • 28.7 • 9.8
From 10 to 13, at Dance Makers

In this 12-hour workshop series, there’s an underlying topic about connection, which is something I believe I’m pretty good at. As it’s been one of my main interests these 21 years I’ve been dancing Forró (11 years teaching it).So when I say connection, I don’t mean just how you hold your partner’s hands. It’s about connecting with yourself, the music and your partner. Mastering these is key for fabulously enjoyable and delightfully transcendental dances (speaking for myself here).
It’s not easy to teach how to have dances that transcend any experience. I employ what I learned from different interests: somatic emotional psychotherapy training, dance and somatic education, martial arts, from my Forró teacher and mentor, and more.So from the underlying topic of connection we’ll explore 4 different themes, which you can attend individually or take all of them so you’ll really take all the content on connection in addition of the theme of the workshop so you’ll have even more exciting and blissful dances.

Workshop 1

Back when I was learning Forró, there weren’t so many skilled teachers available, and I struggled to learn new content.I had to go from teacher to teacher, and learn all they had to teach. It was tough looking for new schools and teachers. So I was often thinking that my partner might get bored or I would get bored myself from always repeating the exact same movements! That’s why the first workshop will be about how to master repertory and never run out of moves during one dance, even if you never repeat any of them!
Sounds too good to be true, right? 3 hours, unlimited content? Sounds like crypto free cash scams, no?Bear with me, you’ll have to put in the work to really master them. That's why in the workshop we’ll go deep and explore the method for how to make so many variations of common movements, which is not hard at all but will still be a challenge.Which will make you literally have a theoretically unlimited number of movements available for you for each dance! It’s amazing being able to play around and explore new and old possibilities, leading or following expected and unexpected moves and figures.
Workshop 2
While the first workshop is not a requirement for the second, the second will feel like a continuation if you attend both. The topic will be about more complex figures, the infamous 5 and 7-step movements (fast turns). They are extremely gratifying to perform, and at the same time are pretty complex to master both leading and following.Connection is a key player here, and besides working on the technical details and skills, you’ll become more confident in both following such fast turns or leading them.

Although these are not beginner’s movements, if you have attended at least a beginner’s course or the first workshop, you’ll be ready for this one!Meanwhile, more advanced dancers will become sharper and more precise in their execution. Everybody wins!
Workshop 3

We’re all dancing Forró, so we might as well build a deeper connection with the Forró music. We’ll study the theory behind the rhythms, and how we dance to the music. Not only that, but we will explore possibilities for how to express yourself while dancing, using ideas and concepts to support your creativity. This is the workshop that ties to the underlying connection theme regarding connecting with the music.
If you think of the holy trinity of Connection with self, with partner and with music, music is the spirit (don’t ask what the others would be ^^).We feel it, and talk about it but we can’t see or touch it.At the same time, when we connect deeper with the music, we connect deeper with our own dance, the Brazilian culture, and of course, with our dance partners. It’s not just about stepping on the rhythm, and telling the difference between Xote and Baião (which we’ll cover). It’s about understanding the music, even if you don’t understand the language. You can feel it, and when you do, your partner can also feel that.
Workshop 4
I’m leaving the most fun of all as the last, so hopefully everyone will be back from their holidays 🌞 and we can have some fun together.Out of all the 4 workshops, this will be the most playful of all.
It’s about how to get to the other side of the room, in other words, we’ll move in the space with our partner.Studying movements that allow us to do so, challenging ourselves a bit 😉 as we do so, just for fun.
